One of the things I really appreciate about Elfdoll is that Rainman posts pictures of his works in progress.  I enjoy looking at Elfdoll’s “Making Story” section because I love to see the progress pictures and primed masters.  Talk about being insanely talented; it seems like sculpting is as natural as breathing.

Tonight, this entry seems very meaningful to me.

I want to be Rainman when I grow up.

Thanks, Rainman.

This is an artist who produces a very interesting head named Mezz, and will soon offer another named Garsh.  I’m not sure exactly how you order, but they’re really neat heads!

Wow, that is seriously posh.

Other lovely photos at the House of Silent Children

These photos were taken by DoA’s Lirin of Sheri’s dolls. They first picture is from a photoshoot titled “You Floor Me!” That was specifically intended to show off the lovely new floor that Lirin’s father had made for their doll room.

The room, in addition to having nicely scaled props and furniture, is also an engineering wonder. Sheri wrote:

The “You Floor Me” shoot was literally to explore the new fancy floor her talented Dad created for the doll set. He built the 3 walled set last June (2007) as per Emily’s [Lirin's] design. He created beadboard to scale and found lovely flower and vine trim for the baseboard and chair rails. Emily chose the wallpaper and Bob carefully put it up. It is about 4′ by 5 ‘ and we have been finding furniture and accessories to create believable rooms for these resin people to inhabit. Jewelry Boxes can come in very handy and some of the knick-knacks in the photos are things my mother brought me from her travels, and my old dollhouse collection from when I was Emily’s age. I love seeing what Emily finds and puts together for each new setup of the space.

My husband Bob is a professional and fine art photographer and has supplied wonderful lighting equipment, camera gear and of course his expertise in teaching Emily how to take the pictures she imagines in her very creative mind. We homeschooled/unschooled for much of our daughter’s later school years (she is now 20). Following one’s passions to the fullest is a habit that continues to give our lives depth and meaning.

The structure itself breaks down into separate wall units so it can be moved when needed. The floor is also able to be broken down into smaller components. With the new raised floor we can slide the under bed storage boxes underneath it with dolls and props are not being used at the moment. Our living room was the first place Bob set up the doll room. It was great there, but eventually we wanted the room back for Christmastime. So now it resides in our bonus room over the garage, complete with a nice stereo. Listening to just the right music is sometimes a vital aspect of these photo shoots. It is a continuing labor of love by all 3 of us. I am so pleased that we can all play dolls in our own creative fashion.

I think that the creativity of the dolls is just vitally important, and part of why they are such an engrossing hobby (and why they have held my interest for several years now): there is so much that can be done with them, and there are so many tangental arts, interests, and skills that can be brought in.

One more, since there is so much to see! (Click to make big - I LOVE this Masha [Ilse].)

There are so many talented people in this hobby. :)

Thank you very much, Sheri and Lirin!

Bambicrony Lotti, owned by DoA’s Pirate Wench
Picture reposted with permission. [Other pics of this outfit here]

The doll herself is cute, but what really impresses me about this photoshoot is the amazing outfit that Pirate Wench has made for her lovely little creature. The design itself is creative and the worksmanship is nothing short of perfect. If you look at album linked above, you will see her beautiful needlework on the bodice and shoes. And yes, she makes the shoes herself. (I was also a little torn between posting a pic from this shoot and posting a pic from this shoot. The shot of the tiny feet in their tiny shoes slays me!)
Pirate Wench’s knowledge of fabrics and techniques makes my head spin… she describes herself as a fabric snob and a hoarder (with over 100 types of striped lycra!), and she had a charming turn of phrase that makes things easy to understand. For example, the bodice outfit shown above is “a fulled wool fabric otherwise known as felted wool, or what-happens-to-that-best-wool-skirt-when-you-forget-and-run-it-through-the-dryer.”

Though she takes commissions, she is booked up at the moment. This thread is also cool to see some of her other work! :)

Thank you, Pirate Wench!

Cybèle, original doll sculpted and cast by DoA’s Enaibi
Picture reposted with permission.  [Thread on DoA] [Thread on Materiel Celeste]

Enaibi is a french sculptor.  She created her first BJD in June of 2006 and later cast her.  This was Cybèle, a 19 cm girl.   After that, she created two 39cm girls, Naïade and Kyrielle.  All of her dolls have curvy, beautiful bodies and stylized faces.  They are cast in french resin in a variety of colors - white, pale, and ghost.  They’re very professional and seem to have great poseability!

Enaibi likes to sculpt hands and feminine bodies… though she does not like to sculpt knees because it’s boring and difficult.  Amazingly, she can sculpt a full doll in only one week!

Here are a few other pictures.  The small blue doll is the 19cm Cybèle,  the other is one of her 39cm girls.

Original Head: A-NA

Specific Head link: A-NA

I feel guilty to admit this, but I almost didn’t post this because I didn’t want to share it. But it’s just too nice. I love artist-made heads. Especially by Korean artists. Koreans artists seem to just have this magic way of handling mouths and noses.

A-NA is an MSD-sized head made by a Korean artist. I would love to get one of these, but I have a feeling it would be very difficult… and I don’t need any more dolls! :) She also have an amazing section in “Works” that shows a bunch of unfinished heads.  They’re mostly awesome.

If you can give me any more information (such as the artist name), please leave a comment.

Iiiiiiiiiiiiiiit’s Showtime!

These long suit jackets make me swoon.  Look at how they pull in to form to the lines of the SD13 boy bodies.  They make them long longer and very elegant… and the blue one on this page totally pushes my happy buttons.

This seamstress sells frequently on Y!J, but I don’t know if her auctions go high.

Modified Dollstown Estella head on a Volks SD10 torso with original limbs
Picture reposted with permission. [Sale thread on DoA]

I’ve been watching Twigling’s progress for over a year now as she’s sculpted and refined these super-poseable replacement limbs.  Her methods have been unique, from how she made the pieces hollow to the actual jointing structure. The sculpt itself is stunning - I am absolutely in love with the look of the knees and thighs, especially with how seamlessly lovely they are when she stands.  The poseability is amazing as well!  Several times over the last few months Twigling has posted pictures of her posing.

These were originally built around an oldskin SD10 body.  Twigling has said repeatedly how much she loves the beautiful sculpt of the no-jointed torso.  She also intended to put one of the largest doll heads out there onto it - Dollstown Estella.  For the size of her head, Estella would be better proportioned to a 70cm body.  So one of the goals in crafting the replacement limbs was to make a body that was beautiful, poseable, and better proportioned to the Estella head.

Twigling has an LJ with pictures from time to time.  That’s here.  These limbs are currently available for preorder on DoA, here!
Thanks, Twigling!

Current auction: http://page8.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/h48148117

I have no idea who the seamstress is, but she’s certain won some hearts on Y!J.  The photos are simple and without watermarks and there is no link to any website at all in the auction…

This dress is stunning.  I love the shape and fit, as well as the details.  It’s beautiful!

Since no website is provided to link to, I’m going to repost some of the detail pictures for archival purposes.
